Comparison | Multi-function socket drivers

Five tools that replace a nut-driver roll.

Klein, Milwaukee, Malco, and Irwin are not selling the same idea in different colors. Here is the size map, the published weight, and the one fastener size the newer tools dropped.

Quick answer

  • Need SAE and metric in one tool: Klein 32914HD. 12 hex sizes, impact rated, 21.12 oz.
  • SAE only, lightest handled impact driver: Milwaukee 48-22-2921. About 8.2 oz, about $32.
  • SAE, impact, plus a real bit holder: Klein 32910. Six sizes through 9/16, 10.56 oz.
  • Sheet metal, least wobble: Malco MTS2A. Shaft only, #2 square tip, handle sold separately.
  • Hand work and you still need 11/32: IRWIN 1948778. The only one of the five with 11/32. Not for impacts.

A hollow-shaft nut driver roll is honest. It is also a handful of handles, a pouch of its own, and a reason your shoulder notices the truck by Thursday. The drivers in this comparison collapse that roll. Two hex sizes share one collar. You flip the collar. The collars you are not using park on the same shaft. The newer ones chuck into a 1/4-inch impact.

That pitch is now on every endcap. It hides three things that actually decide the purchase. First, "14-in-1" and "6-in-1" are not the same kind of count. Second, the generation that added 9/16 inch dropped 11/32 inch, which is the sheet-metal and electrical size a lot of people bought a nut driver for. Third, nobody who makes these tools has published a magnet pull force. Anyone quoting grams of pull, or a torque number to the tenth, is filling in a blank.

Nelsiq Tool curates unusual, useful tools for people who work with their hands. This is a sort-out of published specifications, manufacturer sheets, and named trade reviews. It is not a secret lab test, and it is not a brand page. Where a number is Klein's, Milwaukee's, Malco's, or Irwin's, it is labeled. Where it is a reviewer's hands, it is labeled that way too.

Most versatile, but the trade-off is weight and bulk. Looking for an all-in-one that replaces multiple pieces in your bag? This may be it. The Klein 32914HD

01

What made the five

The category is the compact socket driver: one handle, several hex sizes, meant to retire a roll. Inside that, the current focus is the impact flip socket, the design Klein put into trade circulation on February 22, 2022 and that Milwaukee, Malco, and DeWalt have since answered.

Irwin is the fifth on purpose. The 1948778 is the older idea, double-ended sockets stored in the handle, and it is still the one a lot of people already own. Leaving it out would make the new tools look newer than the job requires. DeWalt's 6-inch flip shafts and Crescent's reversible nutsetters were looked at and left out. They are bits, not a full driver.

The size map is the article

A filled cell is a yes. A dash is a no. 11/32 inch is marked because it separates the 2022 Klein from everything Klein and Milwaukee are selling now. Metric starts at 6 mm because that is the small end of Irwin's metric twin, not because any of these five tools has it.

  • Klein 32914HD also counts a bit holder and a wrench assist. Those are not hex sizes, so they are not in this grid. Klein lists the package as 10 pieces and the tool as 14-in-1 because of flip socket Dual Function.
  • Klein 32910's seventh function is a 1/4-inch bit holder. Milwaukee does not claim one.
  • Malco's seventh function is a fixed tip. MTS2A is #2 square. MTT25A is T25. MTP2A is #2 Phillips. Buying the wrong tip is a second purchase.
  • Irwin metric sizes are the 1948777 model, a second driver: 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 13 mm on Irwin's own sheet. They are not inside 1948778 which is SAE

A flange helps keep the shank from getting bumped off a ladder hole. One stack, color rings, and a real bit-holder socket. The straightforward Klein. Tight collar and easy to clean. The tip is chosen at the register. Open the handle and swap a socket. Fine on the ground. Slow on a ladder with gloves.

Weight, in ounces

Published, or measured in the Irwin's case. Malco has not published an MTS2A weight. The earlier MTS2 shaft is listed at 3.8 ounces, which would make it the lightest object here. That number is not plotted, because it is a different model.

Project Pine Hills put the 32914HD on a bench at about 1 pound 4 ounces, against 21.12 ounces on Klein's sheet. Close enough to trust the sheet. The same video had Klein's 11-in-1 impact driver at 9.7 ounces. The 14-in-1 is a different class of carry.

05

Which one belongs in the pouch

Answer it from the size map, not from a rating out of ten.

Need metric in the same tool

Buy the Klein 32914HD. It is the only one of the five with SAE and metric on one handle. It still has no 11/32 and no 6 mm. At 21 ounces, the weight is the decision.

Impact, and 11/32 every day

None of the five. Klein's 32907 shaft is still the catalog answer: 1/4 through 1/2 including 11/32, no 9/16, no handle, 4 ounces, 5 inches, impact rated. Malco's older MTS2, not the A, keeps 11/32 and gives up 9/16.

Hand work, and you need 11/32

Buy the IRWIN 1948778. It is the only one of the five with 11/32, and it is the least money. Do not put it in an impact. Metric is a second driver, 1948777.

SAE only, and the pouch is already heavy

Buy the Milwaukee 48-22-2921. Lightest handled impact driver here, about 8 ounces, and the one a Home Depot stocks. You give up metric, 11/32, and Klein's bit-holder socket.

SAE, impact, and a bit holder

Buy the Klein 32910. Six sizes through 9/16, a real bit holder, and a handle, often at a price next to the Milwaukee.

Sheet metal, and wobble ruins the day

Buy the Malco MTS2A if #2 square is your tip. Buy MTT25A for T25, or MTP2A for #2 Phillips. The shaft lives in the impact. The handle is not in the box.

06

What the ads leave out

11/32 inch left the building

Klein's first impact flip socket, the 32900 with a handle and the 32907 without one, included 1/4, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2. The December 27, 2023 release (32910 and 32933) replaced 11/32 with 9/16. Milwaukee's 48-22-2921 copied the new map, not the old one. Malco's A-series did the same. The 32900 handle is out of production. The 32907 shaft was still on Klein's site when this was written.

If your week is panel covers, strut straps, and sheet-metal screws, do not let a 9/16 ring talk you out of the size you actually turn. Buy the new tool and keep one hollow-shaft 11/32. Or buy the old size map on purpose.

Shallow is not hollow

Klein describes the 32910 sockets as shallow, "optimized for hex head fasteners," and the 32914HD as standard depth. A flip collar is a cup. A long screw or a bolt through strut will bottom out. Hollow-shaft nut drivers exist so the shank of the screw disappears up the driver. These tools replace the roll for hex-head sheet metal, self-drillers, and ordinary machine screws. They do not replace a deep socket or a hollow shaft the day the fastener is longer than the cup.

Klein's shaft leaves the handle and goes into an impact.

Irwin's sockets come out of the handle and slip onto a 6 mm shaft that stays a hand tool.

Magnets, without a fake number

Klein says "rare-earth" on the 32914HD and the 32910. Malco says "ultra-powerful" and designs the socket to come off so chips can be cleared. Milwaukee markets a magnetic shank and a QUIK-CLEAR cleanout. None of them publish ounces or grams of pull. This article does not supply the missing number.

Reviewers who have held all three flip brands tend to say Malco holds a screw with the least wobble, Klein is next, and Milwaukee is the loosest. Adrian Garcia put it in that order in October 2024. A December 2025 thread on r/Tools also has a working user who says the opposite about Klein versus Milwaukee on the same fastener. Both can be true of two worn tools. The pattern worth keeping is that fit is not identical, and that the magnet tip on these flip sockets sits proud and chips when it lives in an impact. A chipped magnet still holds something. It does not hold what it held new.

They do not share a shaft

Project Pine Hills, comparing the Milwaukee driver to a Klein flip socket, found a flange on the Milwaukee that the Klein lacks. Set the Milwaukee shank in the hole at the top of a ladder and the bit is less likely to get bumped off. The same video shows Klein's 1/4-inch socket sliding up over a bit, which is the actual bit-holder trick, and Klein's hex carrying splines that reject a plain Milwaukee bit. Morgan's Maintenance checked cross-brand fit in March 2024 and came away with the same rule: do not build a mixed set and expect the collars to interchange.

Klein's system is the one that pays off if you later buy a second shaft, a metric stack, or a longer blade. That is the case American Electrician made in January 2026 for carrying Klein flip sockets over a drawer of almosts.

The 32914HD adds a wrench assist. Klein's May 2025 sell sheet calls it a 7/8-inch drive adapter. Project Pine Hills put calipers on the flats and got about 30 mm, roughly 1-3/16 inch. Those two figures are not the same measurement. If the wrench in your pouch is the reason you want this driver, measure the flats on the one in your hand.

Klein prints it on the 32914HD: not insulated, not for live circuits, do not pry. The other four are not insulated either. A cushion grip is not a liner.

07

The names on the handle

Klein Tools

Family-owned, Lincolnshire, Illinois, selling to the trades since 1857. This is the default hand-tool brand for a lot of electricians, and the flip socket is theirs to lose. The 2023 sell sheet cites U.S. patent 11,318,591. Reputation is the reason a Klein costs what it costs. It is not a promise that the magnet will not chip.

Milwaukee

Techtronic Industries, Brookfield, Wisconsin. The cordless tools carry the reputation. The hand tools are argued about by people who own both colors. This driver earned a place because the Shockwave nut-driver idea is in stock everywhere and the price is not a speech. Distribution is a feature.

Malco

Annandale, Minnesota, since 1950, and still the sheet-metal house brand. HVAC techs recommend Malco nut drivers the way other trades recommend Klein screwdrivers. The C-RHEX flip bit is that reputation in a 1/4-inch hex. It is not famous at a big-box endcap, which is why the price swings so hard between suppliers.

IRWIN

An old American tool name, now under Stanley Black & Decker. The 6-in-1 is a catalog driver, not a 2025 idea. Its reputation is that it is at the store, it has the sizes, and it does not pretend to be an impact socket.

A riveted copper-brown bench robot sitting on a Klein impact flip-socket driver beneath the Nelsiq Tool script logo.
Siq said that he likes the new Klein 32914HD. Extremely versatile addition to a tool bag, but is a bit larger and heavier than the others. Some prefer heavier tools anyways.

08

What we would actually carry

For a service pouch that sees both SAE and metric hex heads in the same day, the Klein 32914HD is the one that deletes a second tool. Dispensers, imported equipment, mixed fasteners on the same machine: that is its job. Accept 21 ounces or do not buy it. There is no light version of "both systems, plus a bit holder, plus a wrench flat."

For a pouch that is already honest about its weight, and for SAE fasteners only, the Milwaukee 48-22-2921 is the driver we would hand someone who has to buy one today. About 8 ounces, about $32, a handle, an impact shank. Keep a single hollow-shaft 11/32 next to it if the panels demand that size. If the collars feel sloppy in the aisle, put it back and look at the Klein 32910, which is often the same money and adds the bit holder.

For sheet metal all week, with a #2 square or a T25 already decided, the Malco shaft lives in the impact and the handle stays home. Buy MTS2, not MTS2A, if 11/32 outranks 9/16. Read the stamp.

The Irwin stays a glovebox and a bench tool. It is the right $16 when the work is by hand and 11/32 has to be in the handle. It is the wrong tool the first time someone chucks it just to zip one screw.

09

Looked at, and left out

Klein 32907. The shaft-only survivor of the 2022 line. Six SAE sizes including 11/32, no 9/16, 4 ounces, 5 inches, impact rated, rare-earth magnet, sockets park on the shaft. Not in the five because the handled tools are what most people are comparing. It answers a specific question: impact, light, and 11/32. Klein 32907 catalog page.

DeWalt DWADENDEXT-2 and DWADENDEXT-2MM. Six-inch flip shafts, four sizes. SAE is 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16. Metric is 7, 8, 10, 13. Around $15 when Morgan's Maintenance covered them in November 2023. A useful extension. Half a set.

Crescent CAVRN6DHX-2. Two 6-inch reversible impact nutsetters, 1/4 by 5/16 and 5/16 by 3/8. A pair of bits. The comparison stops being fair once the largest size is 3/8.

Milwaukee 48-22-2915 and the other 14-in-1 screwdrivers. Those are bit drivers. Phillips, square, Torx, a couple of slots. A socket driver does not become one of those by sharing the words "14-in-1."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best multi-socket nut driver in 2026?

It depends on the size map you need. The Klein 32914HD is the only one of these five with SAE and metric on one handle (21.12 oz). For SAE only, the Milwaukee 48-22-2921 is the lightest handled impact option at about 8.2 oz and about $32. The Klein 32910 adds a real 1/4 in bit holder.

Which flip socket driver still has an 11/32 inch socket?

Of these five, only the IRWIN 1948778, and it is a hand tool, not impact rated. The current Klein, Milwaukee, and Malco A-series tools replaced 11/32 with 9/16. Klein's 32907 shaft and Malco's older MTS2 keep 11/32.

Is the Klein 32914HD impact rated?

Yes. Klein lists the 32914HD as impact rated with 12 hex sizes (SAE and metric), a bit holder, and a wrench assist. It weighs 21.12 oz on Klein's sheet and is not insulated.

Can I use the IRWIN 6-in-1 nut driver in an impact driver?

No. The IRWIN 1948778 sockets slip onto a 6 mm hex shaft that is meant for hand use. Do not chuck it into an impact.

Does the Malco MTS2A come with a handle?

No. The MTS2A is a 1/4 in hex flip-bit shaft with six SAE hex sizes and a fixed #2 square tip. The Connext3 handle is sold separately. Malco has not published an MTS2A weight; the 109 g (3.8 oz) figure online is for the earlier MTS2.

Do Klein, Milwaukee, and Malco flip sockets interchange?

No. Reviewers found a flange on the Milwaukee and splines on the Klein hex that reject other brands' bits. Do not build a mixed set and expect the collars to interchange.

Can a flip socket replace a hollow-shaft nut driver?

Not for long screws. Flip collars are shallow cups. A long screw or a bolt through strut will bottom out, so keep a hollow-shaft driver for those.
